SARILING SANDATAHAN

Sariling Sandatahan

Bago mo mabago ang bansa,
sarili muna ang dapat baguhin.
Bago ipagtanggol ang bayan,
katapangan muna ang buuin.

Kung ibabalik ako sa nakaraan,
siguradong wala akong silbi.
Paano ako lalaban para sa kalayaan
kung ikinukulong ko naman ang aking sarili.

Nakakulong sa pag-ibig--
pag-ibig na limot na.
Nakatali sa lubid,
mahigpit at patuloy na umaasa.

Kahit sa pagpupulong ng katipunan,
wala akong maipagmamalaki

gamit itong pluma’y ituturok
ang mga nais sabihin sa iyo.

Gamit ang utak ni Mabini,
mga salita’y susuriing mabuti.
Mga pananaw ni Rizal,
magsisilbing dasal.

Pagmumura ni Heneral Luna,
sa puso mo ipatatama.
Gagayahin ko si Supremo,
matikas akong tatayo sa harap mo.

Bibigkasin ang mga salita
na noo’y di ko kayang ipahayag.
Lalaban na ako, magiging matapang--
lalaya sa kulungan ng dilag.

Dilag na matagal kong kinapitan
ngunit pinili akong iwanan.

FIREWORKS

Fireworks

We were walking around this wide field of Luneta. Dad. Mom. They were holding my hands while we’re swaying them back and fort. It was a joyous night, smiles were all over the place. Music and choirs echoing carols from afar. The smell of foods made me hunger. “Can I have some barbeque?,” I asked and they nodded with a blunt face.

————————

It’s been a year when we last visited this park. The weather was cold but warm hearts was on the air. Happiness was felt, no sadness was seen in their faces. We were sitting above the grasses, then dad started to sing.

I looked above and suddenly asked, “when will the fireworks display start, dad?”

“It’s gonna be soon, son.” Dad answered with a smile in his face. I looked at him. He’s wearing white shirt and black pants. I turned to mom and she wears the same. I am saddened, I wear a red jumper and black shirt. I thought they planned their shirts to be coupled.

Mom, tapped my back. “Why are you sad?” She asked.

“Nothing,” I replied.

“You should be happy. It’s been a long peaceful year. Inspite of many killings and wars, we should be thankful that we didn’t received much harm. We are blessed and blessings are yet to come. What a year it has been!” Mom laughed and then dad came after. I felt the joy in their eyes, they were so happy. I can’t help my self, I laughed with them. Dad continued singing, then mom and I followed. It was like our voices were like angels singing.

The clock strikes 12 but there were no fireworks appeared. We were waiting, all of the people in the park were waiting. All our faces were in query. I was about to cry but at snap a loud explosion was heard. I looked above and saw the red sparkling lights. “The fireworks, yey!” I shouted with glee. Rapid explosions everywhere and I was jumping in joy.

Mom grabbed me with full of her force. “Drop down, son,” she whispered. I looked at her and I was amazed. She’s now wearing red. I turned to dad, red spots are on his shirt too. “Yey. Is this a suprise?” I shouted. “You are wearing red just like me.” I laughed in joy. It was my best new year.

————————

We arrived at the barbeque station. Dad released my hands to get his wallet. We draw nearer and because I was too excited, I tried to grab one stick. “Hey!” I shouted. “I can’t grab anything.” It made me confused. I looked at them but there’s no reaction at all.

“It’s been a year,” mom whispered.

“Indeed, what a year it has been. Release him now. You have to set him free.” Dad said.

Mom dropped my hand. My red jumpers turns into white.

“You’re near at our hearts though too far. Our angel, our star.”

LIGHT IN ME

Light In Me

Author: Bannie Bandibas

I hear the jingle bells
and the clapping shells
in the kitchen where mama
used to cook shells on "gata."

Grandma also swaying
while she's mixing
the "maja blanca"
and "ube halaya."

Suddenly, someone shouted,
"turn on the lights, Ted."
It's Dad, now smilling,
for our "parol" is twinkling.

Then Grandpa took my hand,
said, "come with me, my son."
We walk towards a tree,
as green as my hoody.

Mom came closer,
she put the last flower.
She stare at me while saying,
"here you come, my little bean."

Dad lift me and Grandpa brought
something thorny, I thought
it was a harmful spider
but it was a star.

Everything in the room lit up,
the tree showed its top.
"Put it there my boy," dad said,
and I did with a scratch in my head.

Then they sorrounded me
and I asked confusely,
"what is happening?
It feels like this is a creepy thing."

"No, my love," grandma countered,
"This is a day should always be remembered.
A baby has spread light and happiness,
and bring joy to the world at its fullest.

A king was born and saved the world,
a child with wisdom and no sword.
We see Him in you, our kite,
Our light that soon will take his flight.

Christmas is for children,
just like you, Ben.
For a gift on this day is savored,
That saves the people He treasured."

Hello,

here are some of the comments for your poem you submitted to the story contest.

Punctuation:  use capitals beginning with each quotation marks
Grammar: a few things were in the wrong tense, such as: "I asked confusely" "Dad lift me"
Theme:  like that there was a Christmas theme - but didn't feel all to Christmassy
Story Cube Prompt:  the question mark wasn't used as well as I had hoped, the flashlight and light bulb were used very wisely
Coherency: a few things did not flow that greatly, and would flow better if you kept with the rhyme scheme throughout the whole poem (e.g. happiness and fullest don't rhyme)
Voice: very distinct voice
Notes: could be a bit more creative on the prompts, but they were there. Rhyme scheme was alright - maybe try play with word order or usehttps://www.thesaurus.com/  to find different words to keep with scheme. Noticed that there were some words from different languages, but the names were very English - don't be afraid to stick with the culture you are writing in!

I hope you find this all helpful! If you have any questions, please let me know.
